2005 Hudson Bay Agribition
On
May 19, 2005 we travelled to Hudson Bay to attend their 4th annual
Agribition.
Agribition in Hudson was
started three years ago in 2002 as part of the Grade 9 science course by
teacher Mike Gorkoff. With the help of the town and the use of their
hockey rink as a showcase, it has been a tremendous success.
We have attended every year,
taking with us llamas that do public relations work well in the first
year, babies in the second year, and a group of four yearling males this
year.
We also take a variety of
crafts that we have done using llama fibre. We have clothing
articles that are made out of llama fibre. Some examples are
sweaters, toques, mitts, scarves, slippers (both knitted and made from
felt), neck warmers and quilts.
Every year we have set up our
spinning wheels and spin for the public. Any one interested in
trying their hand at spinning is welcome to give it a whirl.
The animals that usually come
to Agribition in Hudson Bay are horses (Paints, Quarter Horses, Thoroughbred,
Arabian), mules, donkeys, various breeds of cattle, also ducks,
geese, various types of chickens, rabbits, Katahdin sheep, alpacas and
llamas.
The students do in depth
brochures on all the animals that they will have on display.
This year Ben and Kathy
Yakowec went with us as llama handlers and Louise Yakowec and myself
attended as fibre artists and demonstrated the use of the spinning wheel
and the arts of knitting and crocheting.
